Plan

The extent of demolition would extend from the north corner of the Leeds & Holbeck building society to the south edge of the House of Fraser Dept. Store.

Dealing with two 4 storey blank walls as a "built canyon" will include planting and parasite oriel windows punching through from the respective neighbouring buildings, providing them with additional usable and interesting floor space.

Sketches

Early ideas shown here hint at how the Market re-housing would take place in a form suspended above the opened New Market Arcade.

Primarily, the aim of the reconiguration of lower Briggate would be to create a vista and pedestrian flow through what is currently "blocked" by a dark, univiting space.

An unobstructed and appealing route with collective points of interest punctuating the flow centred by a fluid square, a heart space, allowing for pausing, or resting.

The Site: The Regeneration.

Ever since the plans to change the Corn Exchange into a "Specialist Food Mart" came about in 2006, the stall owners within felt that their time of selling curios and home made goods were extremely limited. Indeed, the stall holders were turfed out on the 20th Nov 2007 and offered no alternative accommodation to sell their wares from.

By using the currently dilapidated, dangerous and underused New Market Arcade as a basis for the regeneration the following is proposed:

- Reinstatement of space for small and independent retailers

- Forging of new link route between the Corn Exchange, Briggate and The Trinity Quarter by demolishing and extending the New Market Arcade.

- Creation of Exchange Square, a new central Public Space.

- Regeneration of Central Road and the buildings which face onto it.

- Redesign and regeneration of the New Market Street Bus Interchange.
